It’s no secret that I am indifferent to the progressive/power/symphonic metal genre. While I will listen to this type of metal over death metal and today’s angry metal, the lack of hooks leads me to lose interest.
Symphony X is a group of talented U.S. musicians, whose music will certainly appeal to fans that wish Stratovarius and Rhapsody were a bit heavier.
The disc opens with the full-on assault of “Inferno (Unleash The Fire).” This song finds guitarist Michael Romeo pulling off some speedy Yngwie Malmsteen inspired playing and vocalist Russell Allen displaying his Dio-esque delivery. A more modern, albeit darker, guitar sound appears on the mid-paced verses of “Wicked” and the faster paced “Incantations of the Apprentice.” The grandiose production, piano, and symphonic edge come through on the 7-minute “Accolade II” and the 24-minute, 7-part, epic title-track.
While I certainly recognize the band’s ability to play, the direct approach of “Inferno,” “Wicked,” and “Incantations” is the most appealing to me. I’m sure it’s my obsession with ‘anthemic metal’ that prevents me from getting into the entire record.
The Bloody Truth: Allen’s ability to alter his vocal style from the throaty Dio style on the tougher tracks to a more melodic approach on the symphonic tracks is a great asset for the band. Additionally, the band does change things up throughout the album. Romeo even adds in some of today’s down-tuning to add a meatier sound to their music. Clearly, I went into writing this review with my indifference to prog/symphonic metal, so I’m not the best guy to promote Symphony X. With that said, if you like the genre or like the band’s past work, The Odyssey will be right up your alley. Those that prefer straight-ahead material will probably want to pass this one up though. | ||
