Rick Springfield may not be metal but I'm a fan of 80s guitar driven rock and often like to cover it here on these pages. I am a fan of the hook, something that is sorely lacking in the music of 2007, but was the key ingredient in almost all music of the 80s. Rick Springfield demonstrated his prowess in writing hook-laden guitar rock tracks throughout the 80s but it was 1981's Working Class Dog and its hit, "Jessie's Girl," that made him a star. Based on true events, the song, originally titled "Randy's Girl" became "Jessie's Girl" after Rick wore a Ron Jessie Rams football jersey. I challenge anyone that grew up in the 80s to not sing along with the song when they hear it these days.
Working Class Dog, with its eye-catching cover with Rick's dog Ronnie front and center, also contained another big hit for Rick, "I've Done Everything For You," originally penned and recorded by Sammy Hagar. Beyond the hits, the other tracks are strong as well, with opener "Love Is Alright Tonite" leading the pack. The remaster is bright as hell and has a lot of punch to it. Three bonus tracks are included, one of which is an interesting demo version of "Jessie's Girl."
The Bloody Truth: While Rick had releases before Working Class Dog, it was this album that catapulted him to stardom. Working Class Dog is an example of how fun rock was in the 80s and what I miss about commercial rock. Rick continues to release new studio albums and tour to this day (one of the few artists from his era), and believe me when I say that he is one dynamic, energetic performer. This guy rocks better than many of the 80s hard rockers do these days.
