Planet X is a progressive rock instrumental project featuring former Dream Theater/Kiss/Alice Cooper keyboardist Derek Sherinian, guitarist Tony MacAlpine, and drummer Virgil Donat. The music centers around the fluidity of Sherinian and MacAlpine who rip with equal ease on their respective instruments. While instrumental projects aren't for every music fan, Planet X is an easy listen, concentrating on a melodic foundation. Certainly there is a technical quality to their songs, but it isn't overwhelming. Recorded in Richmond, Victoria Australia in June 2001, Live From Oz primarily features music from the the band's 2000 debut, Universe, although they did premiere "Ignotus Per Ignotium," which appears on their current studio album MoonBabies. If you're at all interested in progressive instrumental music Planet X is worthy of your time.
