During my interview with Blitz for the Bloodletting cd, I asked him if Overkill would ever play The Chance in Poughkeepsie, NY.  For a variety of reasons, the band did not play that venue over the years, but that all changed in support of their latest platter of destruction, ReliXIV.  Although, Overkill was originally scheduled to play in the main part of The Chance Entertainment Complex, they were moved over to the newer, but much smaller, stage area called The Loft.  Apparently, some band called Less Than Jake was deemed more worthy of the main part of the complex (The Chance).  Although I've attended a ton of shows at The Chance, this was my first experience in The Loft.  Upon entering the venue, I was pleased to see that it was an intimate environment, in which Overkill's stage was set up right on the floor.  I knew that this was going to be a sick event.

At approximately 10:20 PM on Sunday night, Overkill appeared as the dry ice covered the stage.  Launching into "Within Your Eyes," the opening track from ReliXIV, the power and overwhelmingly tight edge that this unit possesses came through loud and clear.  Despite the fact that this was only the third date of the tour, there were no signs of the guys being out of practice.  After delivering the hooky "Damned" from 2003's Killbox 13, lead throat Blitz addressed the crowd with his well-known sense of sarcasm.  "God bless this mess," he said proudly of the club, clearly enjoying the numbers of people that packed into the small space.  With a sense of accomplishment he stated, "20 years and I'm still rotten to the core!"  With that, the band launched into "Rotten...," whipping the slam-dancers into a frenzy.

Despite Blitz's medical issues over the years (and his chain smoking!), physically the guy looks half his age.  His ripped abs and solid biceps had the plus size chick behind me creaming in her pants.  She kept shouting "wip it out" and "give me some of that" and "washboard abs" all evening.  Blitz's hyperactive stage persona is what it was over a decade ago, and is a highlight of watching the band perform live.

Overkill's well-known track "Elimination" was received with full support, while the performance of Feel The Fire's "Raise The Dead" was a shock!  "Bats In The Belfry," "Loaded Rack" and "Old School" debuted from the new album and fit nicely into the classic set.  When Tim Mallare broke part of his drums, Blitz again addressed the crowd with some of his wit.  "There are a lot of familiar faces, and you're getting uglier every year....Look who's talkin', right?," he said with a laugh.

To end the show, the band encored with "Necroshine" from their 1999 album of the same name, the classic "Wrecking Crew," and their foul-mouthed classic, "F*** You."  Only a band like Overkill could make a classic out of a song like that.

The Bloody Truth:  Overkill is a band with a helluva lot of street cred.  Maybe that's because they've never never left the gutter that they grew up in.  They are tight as all hell and probably one of the few metal bands that have stayed true to their fanbase over the years.  They know that they are a metal band and don't care about crossing over.  Seeing them live is a treat, although somewhat dangerous if you get stuck in the pit.  While I would have loved to have heard "Thunderhead" from Bloodletting, "Devil By The Tail" from Killbox 13," Long Time Dyin' from From The Underground, "I Hate" from The Years Of Decay, and "Coma" from Horrorscope, the 18 song setlist did cover a lot of area for a band with fourteen releases.  If anybody can help me out with the two tracks that I missed (listed in the setlist above), email me at MTLDREAMS@aol.com.  If Overkill hits your town, don't miss 'em.  They are supporting the cause, so you should support them!  Plus, you'll have a headbangin' and fist-pumpin' good time!
