New Jersey thrash legends Overkill are back and the title of their new opus, Immortalis, is fitting, considering these guys will never die! Much like Motorhead, you can always expect a new Overkill record! Immortalis finds Overkill firing on all cylinders - slashing, crashing, and bashing, just the way us fellow neck wreckers like them. Vocalist Bobby 'Blitz' Ellsworth's distinctive teeth-clenched approach is in fine ear-splitting, mouth-foaming form here in 2007, and he shows today's shitty extreme metal bands that you don't have to gargle with Drano to be a vicious metal vocalist. Instrumentally, guitarists Dave Linsk and Derek Tailer, bassist D.D. Verni and new drummer Ron Lipnicki are playing prominent, thunderous rhythms, and Linsk throws in some frantic solos just like all good metal guitarist should.
Do you want to beat the shit out of someone on a daily basis? I know I do. The problem with that...I really don't like the idea of being arrested or getting taken to court. So, what's a guy to do? Well, listening to the songs on Immortalis at full volume while driving your car (just watch the heavy foot) is a great way to get your aggressions out without going to jail. This shit is angry, headbanging stuff that commands you to tap your foot and thrust your fist in the air. Plus, you'll want to sing along with Blitz's hook filled lyrics (and you can understand what he's saying - how great is that?!?!)
So, how would I compare Immortalis to Overkill's other records? Well, that's always a tough one. It's certainly a cd that fits in nicely with their best stuff. I hear elements of their classic Horrorscope, as well as more recent recordings like Bloodletting, so I think this one is satisfying across the board.
The Bloody Truth: Overkill has never abandoned their thrash metal roots. This is metal for the blue collar, pit loving, long haired headbanger. Immortalis spotlights thunderous riffs from start to finish, some of Blitz's finest spewing, and a chunky, thunderous production. Guys, Thank you for delivering the goods - I appreciate your dedication and understanding of what heavy metal/thrash metal is all about! You are the Wrecking Crew!
