Obscure is an unsigned progressive metal band from Phoenix, Arizona. The band got its start in 1995 when bassist Mike Farris and guitarist Vince LuPone started jamming together, and was fully formed when vocalist Jim Calabrese joined in 1998.

This four song EP is of demo quality, which limits its appeal. However, there are some elements that certainly shine through the flat production. Vince LuPone's chunky riffs and screaming solos are very professional and have a nice tone, and Casey Dixon's drumming assault creates a strong presence. Unfortunately Jim Calabrese comes off too flat, and his vocal lines aren't catchy at all.

The Bloody Truth: The progressive arena is a tough one to gain success in because the expectations are way too high. After all, how can an unsigned band really touch the likes of Dream Theater? Despite the band falling short, I think LuPone and Dixon are strong musicians who would do really well in a straight-ahead heavy metal band.
