Formed in 1989, Novembers Doom hail from Chicago and deliver dark, gloomy, symphonic death metal.  The Pale Haunt Departure is the band’s fifth release and it finds them mixing diverse styles.  One-minute vocalist Paul Kuhr is delivering typical death metal growls and the next he sounds like he belongs in Anathema or Type O Negative.  Musically, the band seems to have been influenced by Anathema as well, delivering gentle acoustic passages throughout much of the disc.  But similar to a band like Opeth, Novembers Doom transition from softer moments to distorted and crushing instrumentation.  One of the music's best qualities, however, is the incorporation of clean solos on many of the songs.

The Bloody Truth: The music of Novembers Doom is despondent and downtrodden.  While they incorporate extreme vocals, the softer approaches separate them from many of their peers.  Fans of Opeth, Dark Tranquillity, and Anathema should seek this disc out.  Although I can appreciate the band's intensity and ability, I'm just not a real fan of the genre, so this gains nothing more than an average rating.  If this is your kind of music, crank the rating up an axe or so.
