MOON -
Jesters
Moon (self-released)
Score: 2.5 out of 5 Battle-Axes (more about rating system) Portland, Oregon based Jesters Moon pride themselves on the fact that they are 'Just Heavy Metal,' not nu-metal, rap-metal or alt-metal. They get props from me for that. Originally known as Bangin' Moon, the band has an eerie but traditional sound, primarily due to Vido Sinn's guitar riffs and tone. Bryce Van Patten has a hauntingly dark vocal style, which works very well with the music (especially "Devils Eyes"). The problem is that Van Patten's vocals aren't mixed well, and they get lost, so much so that much of it sounds garbled. I know this band has something really good to offer but this debut doesn't exhibit it to the level that it should. Some work on developing hookier choruses should also be a priority, because it's a damn shame to waste Sinn's catchy, quick paced riffs. Interesting note: Wild Dogs' vocalist Matt McCourt sings a duet with Van Patten on "No Clue." (Chris Dugan) |
