I'd term Jackyl's brand of hard rock as 'hillbilly hard rock,' 'redneck rock,' or 'trailer trash hard rock'.  Their approach to music is gritty and dirty with a full dose of 'who gives a f***' attitude.  Musically, these guys should appeal to anybody who likes 70s hard rock guitar riffage, but vocalist Jesse James Dupree is an acquired taste.  His high-pitched 'stepping on a dog's tail' approach can be annoying to many.

This DVD, Live At The Full Throttle Saloon, was filmed in the Summer of 2003 in South Dakota.  Has any other band ever filmed a concert in South Dakota?  I forgot that South Dakota even existed until now.

To open the show and reinforce the 'redneck' vibe, a midget is seen riding his motorcycle on stage and burning some rubber, only to be followed by the WWE's Bill Goldberg riding his motorcycle on stage.  Interestingly the midget looks like a pint size version of Goldberg.

Songwise we're treated to little ditties such as "She Loves My Cock" and "Mental Masturbation," as well as some songs that once got a bit of play on MTV - "Down On Me," "I Stand Alone," "When Will It Rain," "The Lumberjack," and "Push Comes To Shove."  Seven of the fourteen tracks are culled from the band's 1992 debut, while only two tracks are taken from Push Comes To Shove, and 1997's Cut The Crap is completely ignored.  Four songs are performed from 2002's Relentless.

Extras include watching the guys make soup on the tour bus (yawn!), checking out their rigs (i.e. musical equipment), and a very well done promo clip for "Billy Badass."

The Bloody Truth: I appreciate Jackyl's dirty approach to rock n' roll.  This dvd spotlights an energetic band (especially drummer Chris Worley) that has somehow avoided skid row and the hard rock graveyard.  The large crowd at The Full Throttle Saloon is clearly into them, but I still find Dupree's vocals grating and can only take him in small doses, so that is the detraction for me here.  Musically, I just love their unrestrained delivery.  This DVD is not a necessity for sure, but it certainly captures the Jackyl vibe.
