THE IMPOTENT SEA SNAKES -
Everything In
Excess (Cleopatra Records)
Score: 3 out of 5 Battle-Axes (more about rating system) The first time I heard of The Impotent Sea Snakes was when they were pegged for the opening slot of the Motorhead/W.A.S.P. tour a few years back. Although I never caught any of their performances, word circulated around that the band was more than a bit shocking, described as a live S&M show. The cd booklet for Everything In Excess has a load of pictures that depicts exactly that, plus blood, transvestites, snakes, fire breathing, power tools, burning crosses, goat's heads, nudity and a whole lot more. That combined with songs like "Let Go O' My Thang" shows that this band is definitely pushing the meaning of the word 'outrageous.' Musically though, they are more reserved in their presentation than one would expect, especially on the laid back ballad "You're My Vampire" and the female vocalized, acoustic, country song "Me & Bobby McGee." The group has a slight techno/dance edge with heavy guitars and male vocals, that range from deep to nasal, on tracks like "The Resurrection Of Rock & Roll" and "Remake Me." These tracks are where the band comes off the best. Glam/sleaze fans will probably be most attracted to The Impotent Sea Snakes, but the band may appeal to fans of some avant-garde styles of rock as well. (Chris Dugan) |
