Perris Records aims to dig up every unknown band that recorded material in the 80s and early 90s, and Grandma Moses is just one of the bands that they’ve uncovered. Too Little, Too Late is a 23-song recording from this sleazy, punk, hard rock band that came out of Vancouver in 1991. Internal problems caused the band to split before they could release a full album, so these 23 songs will be new to everyone except those that may have caught the band live back in the day. Musically, the band is clearly influenced by The Ramones, Sex Pistols, and Hanoi Rocks, but there is certainly an 80s glam and metal vibe running through the tracks too. Maybe that’s because drummer Sandy Hazard was part of the original Pretty Boy Floyd. Choruses stick out in these short, compact songs, so that’s a good thing, but the big weakness is the very flat production. Vocally, Todd Stevens sounds like a cross between Joey Ramone and Kory Clarke (Warrior Soul). And the guitar team of Mick Wood and Mike Abrams nicely mix Ramones rhythms with some sharp leads.
The Bottom Line: With better production this would have been a stronger release, as the individual parts of all involved would have become a bit clearer. The production really makes the album feel too long and individual songs seem a whole lot less individual. Despite this, I certainly appreciate Grandma Moses’ energetic, semi-pissed off, reckless approach. For those that like stripped down glam, sleaze with a punk edge, give this a listen.
