When guitarist Stefan Weinerhall folded his pagan/black metal band Mithotyn, he decided to take his next group in a traditional direction with a clean vocalist. Falconer was born and vocalist Mathias Blad was recruited. After a drum machine was used for their demo, Weinerhall enlisted ex-Mithotyn drummer Karsten Larsson for Falconer's self-titled debut in 2001. Chapters From A Vale Forlorn is the band's follow-up and continues with the same power metal direction as the debut. Falconer's players are certainly accomplished, but there is something very unoriginal about them. Diehard Power metal fans probably won't care, but to me, Falconer is an example of how tired this sub-genre has gotten. Blad has a clear and smooth style, but there is absolutely nothing interesting about him. There isn't an emphasis on the choruses either, something that turns me off as well. The band also throws in a Renaissance and strolling-minstrel vibe, which takes away any chance of the band having a bite or an edge. I'll stick with Gamma Ray and classic Helloween.
