Angus formed in 1983 in Amsterdam, Holland.  Named after a Scottish bull and AC/DC’s Angus Young, the group was originally made up of vocalist Edgar Lois, guitarist Ed Sprey, bassist Gerard Carol, and drummer William Lawson.  By late 1985 Sprey exited, replaced by Bert Foxx.  Track Of Doom was released in 1986 in Holland on Megaton Records.  In early 1987, Restless/Enigma released the album in the USA.  For the band’s second album, 1987’s Warrior Of The World, Gerard Carol left due to medical reasons, and was replaced in the studio by bassist Andre Versluys and live by Mike Shults.  Angus eventually dissolved in 1988 when William Lawson exited the fold after a dispute with Megaton Records.

Musically, the band has an early speed metal vibe and while they’re stripped down, the guys prove that they were proficient in their approach.  Guitarist Bert Foxx is quite accomplished in his riffs and solos and the drumming is up-front and heavy.  The band is very European sounding, and vocalist Edgar Lois sometimes sounds like Saxon’s Biff Byford.  The choruses are not the best, though, and it’s hard to pick up the song titles as you’re listening.  The hookiest and most traditional track is “Warrior Of The World,” but the anthemic vibe of this song is quite different than the speedier quality of the rest.

The Bloody Truth:  Leave it to Sentinel Steel’s Denis Gulbey to dig up a band like Angus. Their underground sound will appeal to anybody into the speed metal scene of the 80s.  If you like raw, uncompromising true metal, Angus is a band you should check out.
